ABOUT US
In 2005 Christy Henderson wanted to volunteer at a therapeutic riding center, but discovered that no such center existed in the Jackson metro area. Undaunted, she decided to move forward and create a therapeutic riding center to fill the need. Christy joined NARHA and began taking advantage of their great reference and educational materials. She also met the directors and staff members of therapeutic riding centers through regional conferences and workshops, and visited many centers. Everyone generously shared their expertise and encouraged Christy in her efforts.
Over the next two years, Christy established a RideABILITY Board of Directors, acquired non-profit status as a 501(c)(3), and she completed NARHA certified therapeutic riding instructor training. Also during this time, Ashley Harris, of Harris Heights Farm, generously offered RideABILITY the opportunity to operate on her farm, free of charge. Ashley allowed RideABILITY to build a 100 x 150 ft. fenced arena and a sturdy wheelchair mounting ramp at Harris Heights. RideABILITY conducted its first volunteer training session and began the first riding lessons with only four riders in October 2007.
RideABILITY currently hosts lessons three days a week (Monday, Tuesday, and Saturday) for students with a wide range of special needs. Our wonderful volunteers and persistent parents and caregivers make RideABILITYs growth possible. The organization grew enough to hire its first employee and added a second instructor when volunteer Linda Harper completed NARHA instructor certification in June 2010.
